All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord ’s, and he will give af you into our hands.”

1 Samuel 17:47 NIV

There are many stories of great deliverance in the Bible- Gideon and his handful of men, Joshua and the walls of Jericho, Elisha and the blinded Syrian army - all of which remind us that how things appear does not necessarily dictate the outcome when God is on your side.

When faced with the size and strength of Goliath and the Philistine army, David a young shepherd boy did not see things as they appeared to the rest of the Israelite troops. David saw a man who compared to God was tiny, a man who had the audacity to deride God's chosen people; he also knew that the way to fight this enemy was not to do so in the natural.

To take on Goliath with the sword or spear would have been to assure defeat but to recognise that the battle wasn't his but God's meant there could be only one winner. In our lives we try to fight many battles "with sword and spear" but God is with us saying, 'let me take this one, the battle is mine not yours'.

The battle you face today is not won by your own strength or strategy, it's not even your battle - it belongs to God. Stop fighting His battles, stand still, rest and see how He will give it all into your hands.
