When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’ John 8 v 12

Let’s just take one moment and imagine how different our day-to-day life would be if it were in darkness.

Think of all the times we have needed to use our phone torch to see, the times where we have had to light a candle when the electricity has gone off and the frustration we have felt when we hit the light switch, but the bulb needs replaced! Without light we struggle to see where we were going, we are unable to find things and we might not always be able to protect ourselves from danger and hazardous situations. But more than this we miss the beauty of the world around us that God has created. I imagine that a life in total darkness would feel more like ‘survival mode’ and not a life of fulfilment where we excel and can thrive! In darkness fear can rise, isolation can peek, uncertainty is at the forefront of our minds and we experience loss of direction, purpose and even motivation to continue – things are just too difficult!

This is a similar picture to the difference that knowing the person of Jesus in our lives will have!

This Jesus, who promises we will have the light of life if we follow Him, seeks to give us a light-filled life every day. In today’s verse, the word light used is ‘phos’, it literally means ‘the manifestation of God’s self-existent life’ whilst also making reference to the ‘divine illumination that reveals and imparts life.’ Here we can very evidently see that light is all about life. So how do we walk in this life that has been revealed and imparted to us? We can be hope filled people, assured of the fact that we are righteous because of Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross. We can know today that God’s promises never fail and His plans are to prosper us and give us a future. We can have a supernatural peace each day as we walk in the light that comes from a life with Jesus.

Let us take heart today afresh, let us recognise who the person of Jesus is in our lives! He brings light and life to us, even in our darkest and most difficult of moments. Be encouraged today that we have a light in our lives that has the power to overcome darkness: John 1 verse 5 says ‘the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’ The light of life in the person of Jesus Christ in our lives is superior, all powerful and victorious!
