But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Matthew 14:30

Just because God called and gifted us to do something doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy.  Yet sometimes we think that walking in God’s favour means everything is pure bliss, and problems are a consequence of not spending enough time with God.  I’m not sure the Apostle Paul would agree!

In our story today we see Jesus calling Peter to walk on the water.  Something that is impossible to do even on a calm day.  Yet Peter does the impossible because he responds to the call.  The call of God gives Peter the ability to do what he was called to do.  However, not long after entering the water he was distracted by the wind and the waves.  His circumstances were speaking to him, telling him that he didn’t have the ability to do what he was doing.

Do you feel like you are sinking today, overwhelmed by demand, anxious about your perceived inability to do what you need to do?  Let me help you out – you can’t do it so stop trying. Looking at our circumstances opens the door to fear and anxiety.  Looking to Jesus and His promise fills us with hope and confidence.  Perspective is everything.
